HAYON MANUFACTURING, inventors of the Original Automatic Pan Spraying Equipment, has been designing and creating innovative bakery release application machinery for over 50 years and we’ve always lauded our equipment as a far easier and more environmentally sustainable way of applying bakery release agents.

In conjunction with our introduction of HAYON PAN-RELEASE, we decided to take a closer look and compare just exactly how much more sustainable and cost-effective the use of our spray equipment is as compared to the use of aerosol cans so commonly found in many bakeries.

We selected a popular aerosol release in a 14oz can, six cans per case, 246 cases per pallet shipment, and assumed a common consumption rate from a medium sized bakery of one pallet per month.


One pallet of aerosol spray cans contains 246 cases x 6 cans per case or 1476 units. Each unit is comprised of a can, its release agent contents and a cap and 246 boxes to package the cases. After weighing all of the individual components, we found that a pallet of aerosol cans creates three streams of waste or recyclables; 201 pounds of steel cans, 42 pounds of plastic can caps and 72 pounds of cardboard, all 315 pounds of which are either landfilled or recycled monthly.


A pallet of 14oz aerosol cans, (1476 cans) were weighed full, (1575 pounds), and after subtracting the amount of weight for the cans and caps we determined that the actual amount of product in the cans was 1332 pounds. The aerosol cans were emptied, contents weighed and we found that the release agent in the can weighed only 1118#s which meant that the missing 214 pounds must be associated with the propane, butane or isobutene propellant. In addition to the carbon foot print created when manufacturing the cardboard, steel can and plastic caps, another 214 pounds of lost greenhouse gas is emitted directly into the atmosphere with each pallet used monthly.

Our Hayon equipment is manufactured with no disposable parts and we now offer a line of release agents to complement our equipment, providing our customers the opportunity to transition away from a highly wasteful application method to a far more sustainable process. The same amount of actual release agent from the paragraphs above is equivalent to 31 of our 36 pound pails and when sprayed through our equipment, the waste profile becomes a single stream of plastic pails each weighing 3 pounds when empty or 93 pounds of recyclable plastic each month. When the plastic pail waste stream of 93 pounds is compared to 315 pounds of multi component material from the cans and the 214 pounds of emitted greenhouse gases, utilizing our equipment offers the opportunity to reduce the total amount of waste by 82% as compared to aerosol cans.

The use of our application equipment reduces the distance to transport materials by lowering the amount of physical waste by 70%-fewer waste reclamation trips, using our application equipment reduces greenhouse gas emissions from 214 pounds per month to zero, and again, we reduce the total amount of recyclables from three streams at 315 pounds per month total to 93 pounds in a single stream.

Lastly, by transitioning to our equipment from aerosol cans, our customers experience a return on investment within four to twenty-four months simply as a result of the substantial cost savings appreciated in both product and labor. Our equipment also provides a safer work environment as there are no breathable airborne propellants and slippery floors. Any airborne misting is contained within the designed hood and enclosure of each of our two Models; MODEL 6400 and MODEL 6700 SERIES SELECT-A-SPRAY.
